The Importance of Reading (3): Read to Baby from Birth - and Even Before...

I would like to share my experience meeting a ‘new Mom’. It was long time ago when I studied in Yogyakarta. This experience was quite remarkable moment because, I think, that was the first time I came across with parenting world. She actually studied Psychology in the university, so I could have constant smoothly conversations during my stay in the same rent house with her.

She has got a 7-month-old son at that time. Everyday her son would get study time that scheduled in the morning and in the afternoon. He had to study with his Mom by reading some pictures’ books! As you probably notice, the pictures’ books are many available in the book stores nowadays, and sometimes there are some choices for the languages as well. Back to my story then. Surprisingly, the boy's body clock would absolutely recognise his study time schedules by his own! It means, when his Mom told the boy, “It’s time to study now”, he would happily sit still with his Mom and got ready for studying! Why? It was because he got used to it. And as matter of fact, he distinguished that reading was a fun moment with his Mom!

Anyhow, I saw the boy ‘reading the books’ with full of interest. Whilst his Mom mentioned what picture it was, one by one, he consecutively pointed at the certain picture by his finger, exactly on the correct picture! Even though he could not speak yet, he was really enthusiastic learning new pictures and matching them with their names directed orally by his Mom during his study time. I wondered, how come? J

In point of fact, it was an amazing moment ‘studying with him’. His Mom said that he had already been studying the pictures’ books for 7 months. She then described that by doing that method of learning (by reading the pictures) since the earlier years of the child, eventually, the development of the brain would increase significantly. Therefore, she added, when his son grows up, his brain would be able to function to the maximum compared to his counterparts whom were not doing the same thing. Praise The Lord.* (WONN)
